Man who waged 12 minute shootout with police wanted to start anti-government revolution

A rural, anti-government zealot and twice-convicted bank robber who engaged in a 12 minute gun battle with California Highway Patrol officers was intent on “killing important people” at the San Francisco offices of the American Civil Liberties Union and at an environmental foundation, but was stopped for speeding and driving erratically on the way to Armageddon, triggering the prolonged gun battle.

Wearing a bullet proof vest, parolee Byron Williams fired a 9 mm pistol, a .308 caliber rifle, and a shotgun at officers, using armor and metal-piecing ammo and reloading, but was finally stopped when officers’ rounds hit him in areas of his body not protected by body armor.

According to an Oakland, California, police spokesman, Williams told officers after his arrest that “his intention was to start a revolution by traveling to San Francisco and killing people of importance at the Tides Foundation and the ACLU.”
