Only 11% of young female users understand Facebook privacy settings

I’ve often laughed at the suggestion that young people understand computers and computing — since I so often see glaring examples of the precise opposite — even in tech fields where users should be expected to have a basic understanding of their tools. (Afterhours, I’m a musician and former studio recording engineer, and I often participate in online recording tech discussion forums.)

Sure, a lot of kids can tell you all about the seventh level of some computer based role-playing game or how to hook up a Wii to a television. But understand the technology or even basic functionalities? Ha!

So, maybe it ¬†shouldn’t have come as that much of a surprise that only 11% of female Facebook users under the age of 25 actually understand Facebook’s basic user privacy controls enough to work them properly.

But, if these kids don’t know the first thing about Facebook — where they waste ¬†countless hours of time — my gosh, what DO they know?

Man who waged 12 minute shootout with police wanted to start anti-government revolution

A rural, anti-government zealot and twice-convicted bank robber who engaged in a 12 minute gun battle with California Highway Patrol officers was intent on “killing important people” at the San Francisco offices of the American Civil Liberties Union and at an environmental foundation, but was stopped for speeding and driving erratically on the way to Armageddon, triggering the prolonged gun battle.

Wearing a bullet proof vest, parolee Byron Williams fired a 9 mm pistol, a .308 caliber rifle, and a shotgun at officers, using armor and metal-piecing ammo and reloading, but was finally stopped when officers’ rounds hit him in areas of his body not protected by body armor.

According to an Oakland, California, police spokesman, Williams told officers after his arrest that “his intention was to start a revolution by traveling to San Francisco and killing people of importance at the Tides Foundation and the ACLU.”

Roman Catholic Church equates ordaining women priests with raping chilidren

That wacky, anything goes Vatican is at it again, kids!

Their latest decree trying to address the Church’s long history of aiding, abetting, and protecting priests who rape children has taken another facepalm turn, with the Church’s new decree placing the ‘attempt’ to ordain women priests on the same level of wickedness as the rape of children. What happened to those damage-containment PR specialists they hired?
